On 16 November, the Appeal Committee, comprised of representatives of the EU Member States, did not reach an opinion on the European Commission’s proposal to renew the approval of glyphosate in the EU for another ten years.

On 20 September, the European Commission published the draft Implementing Regulation for the renewal of the authorisation of glyphosate for 10 years. The Glyphosate Renewal Group (GRG) welcomes the draft regulation, which builds on the strong science-based conclusions of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Glyphosate molecule has a different toxicological profile from Glyphosate Trimesium, which has not been sold in the EU in the past 20 years.

On May 22, 2023, the Glyphosate Renewal Group (GRG) organized an event in media partnership with EURACTIV- “Soil health & agriculture: Going beneath the surface.”

The GRG would like to address a common statement that non-chemical weed control alternatives and other preventative methods could easily replace herbicides in general and glyphosate in particular.

On 2 December, the Commission adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/2364, renewing the approval of the active substance glyphosate by one year until 15 December 2023.

On May 30th the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced the conclusion of its review of the classification of glyphosate. Based on a wide-ranging review of scientific evidence, the ECHA Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) concludes that classifying glyphosate as a carcinogen is not justified.

On May 10th 2022, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a press release, informing that the evaluation for the renewal of the EU authorisation of the active substance glyphosate, as stipulated by the EU Plant Protection Regulation (Regulation (EC) 1107/2009), will be delayed.

An online policy dialogue organized by EURACTIV and supported by the GRG took place on 4 November 2021. The event brought together a panel of experienced professionals to discuss how biodiversity was addressed in the Scientific Report on the Assessment of the Renewal, glyphosate’s role in agricultural practices, and whether and how it can contribute to greater biodiversity.

On 15 June 2021, the Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG) has shared its draft renewal assessment report with EFSA and ECHA, as provided by the EU Plant Protection Regulation. The AGG considers that glyphosate does meet the approval criteria set in the EU Regulation. The evaluation will progress to the next step in the regulatory process.

The GRG expresses its deep disappointment from the European Parliament’s adoption of the Own Initiative Report on the Biodiversity Strategy on 8 June 2021, including a specific clause calling to oppose the reauthorisation of glyphosate following the expiration of the current authorisation on 31 December 2022.

A virtual policy dialogue organized by EURACTIV and supported by the GRG took place on 20 April 2021, brought together a panel of experienced professionals to discuss the timely topic of glyphosate's ongoing regulatory renewal process, and the possible implications of eliminating it from the farmers' toolbox.

By granting easy, unhindered and unrestricted access to the glyphosate scientific studies that are part of the dossier for this substance’s re-authorisation in the EU, the Glyphosate Renewal Group marks an unprecedented step and sets the highest transparency standards ever seen in a regulatory process.

Today 18 August, the Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG) concluded that the new scientific dossier submitted on 8 June by the Glyphosate Renewal Group is admissible. The AGG will initiate now the science-based evaluation of glyphosate safety.

On Monday, 8 June, the Glyphosate Renewal Group submitted the scientific dossier in view of a new evaluation and risk assessment of the active substance glyphosate. The submitted scientific dossier, including 100 newly performed studies, will be accessible via this website.
